Dallas police have identified the gunman behind Wednesday morning’s deadly shooting at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field office as 29-year-old Joshua Jahn.
Authorities say Jahn opened fire around 6:40 a.m. from an adjacent building overlooking the ICE facility on North Stemmons Freeway. According to initial reports, he used a rifle while positioned on a rooftop, striking three people before taking his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound as officers closed in.
Police confirmed that one victim died at the scene, while two others were rushed to the hospital with serious gunshot wounds. Later, ICE officials clarified that two of the victims, both believed to be detainees, succumbed to their injuries, leaving one survivor in critical condition. No ICE officers were injured in the attack.
Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin told Fox News that the office targeted was a field office, not a detention facility, where short-term processing of detainees takes place. Investigators are still piecing together the shooter’s exact location, though preliminary findings suggest he may have fired from a rooftop vantage point.
The shooting has rattled Dallas residents and raised fresh concerns about politically motivated violence. The incident occurred just two weeks after the sniper killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Orem, Utah — an event that has intensified national debate over political extremism and security threats.
President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance both addressed the Dallas shooting in statements Wednesday morning, condemning the violence and pledging full federal cooperation with local investigators.
Police have not yet confirmed Jahn’s motive, but authorities said a detailed briefing will be provided later in the day. The FBI and Department of Homeland Security are assisting Dallas police in the investigation.
